Don't Gift Lottery Tickets to Children, Experts Warn
Lottery products can increase the risk of gambling problems when introduced during childhood, according to research. The Gift Responsibly Campaign, launched by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and McGill University's International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems, aims to prevent this risk by discouraging adults from giving lottery tickets to minors.
Previously known as the Responsible Gambling Holiday Lottery Campaign, the initiative has been running since 2003. The recent rebranding allows organizations to promote responsible gambling beyond just the holiday season, extending to other gift-giving occasions like birthdays and graduations.
"Early exposure to gambling activities through lottery gifts increases the possibility that children will develop a gambling addiction as they grow older," explains NCPG Executive Director Keith Whyte. The campaign particularly focuses on lottery tickets, as they represent the most widely participated form of gambling.
The 2021 campaign achieved 100% participation from eligible Canadian and U.S. lotteries for the fourth consecutive year. It has gained support from international lotteries, non-lottery organizations, and major industry associations including the European Lotteries, North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries, and the World Lottery Association.
Jeffrey Derevensky, Director of the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors, emphasizes that while December remains the campaign's primary focus, the message is relevant year-round.
Participating organizations join the free campaign by committing to various promotional activities, with involvement ranging from Level 1 to Level 3 engagement. The campaign includes numerous state lotteries, gaming authorities, and organizations dedicated to problem gambling prevention across North America and internationally.
