Start.gg Returns to Independence Under Original Smash.gg Leadership Team
Start.gg, the prominent tournament organizing platform, has announced its return to independence after being acquired by Microsoft in 2020. Co-founder Chris Ogle revealed that the platform will continue supporting both grassroots and professional esports communities while introducing new changes to ensure sustainability.
Originally known as Smash.gg, the platform has evolved beyond its Super Smash Bros. roots to serve multiple gaming communities, including Rocket League and Pokémon Unite. The site provides essential services such as tournament standings tracking, merchandise shops, and registration fee processing.
Key changes under the new independent structure:
- Introduction of a new registration fee for tournament payments
- Continued focus on improving self-service features
- Ongoing platform updates to benefit tournament organizers and players
Despite leaving Microsoft's umbrella, Ogle expressed gratitude for Microsoft and Xbox's support, framing this transition as a positive "new chapter" for the platform. The company remains committed to its original 2015 mission of fostering esports communities around beloved games.
