Key Points:
- VGW operates Chumba Casino and Luckyland Slots in the U.S.
- The order came after VGW testified against a Maryland bill prohibiting sweepstakes games
- Maryland only permits licensed online sports betting and fantasy competitions
- VGW lacks necessary gaming licenses in Maryland
- iGaming is currently prohibited in the state
MLGCA Requirements from VGW by March 27:
- Detailed descriptions of all casino game offerings with mobile links or retail locations
- Documentation of sports wagering offerings
- Information about fantasy competition offerings
- Legal analysis supporting their operations in Maryland
The cease-and-desist follows ongoing legislative efforts to prohibit sweepstakes casinos in Maryland, with a bill already approved by the Senate and pending in the House. According to Del. Eric Ebersole (D-44A), approximately $6 billion is wagered annually in unregulated markets in Maryland.
If VGW is found operating unlicensed gaming activities, they must acknowledge this in their response and provide a cessation date within 10 days of the order.
