GRIT Act Reintroduced: National Council Backs First Federal Funding for Gambling Addiction Treatment
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) endorses the reintroduction of the Gambling addiction Recovery, Investment, and Treatment (GRIT) Act by Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Andrea Salinas. This groundbreaking legislation creates the first federal funding stream for gambling addiction treatment, prevention, and research across the United States.
The GRIT Act addresses the growing need for problem gambling services, especially crucial given the rapid expansion of sports betting and other gambling forms nationwide.
Key Features of the GRIT Act:
- Allocates 50% of federal sports betting excise tax to fund gambling addiction programs
- Distributes 75% of funds to states for prevention and treatment through SAMHSA
- Dedicates 25% to the National Institute on Drug Abuse for research
- Utilizes existing Health & Human Services programs, requiring no new bureaucracy
- Provides sustained funding for 10 years
- Requires effectiveness reporting within three years
The legislation aims to help states strengthen their prevention and treatment programs while developing long-term solutions for gambling-related harm. Implementation will occur through established health agencies, ensuring efficient distribution of resources.
